9/6/06 On a sad note, the Michigan NBL has lost one of it's finest volunteers. Kelly Burnette passed away on September 2nd, one day short of his 77th birthday. Kelly and his wife Lawrie have been involved in BMX from the beginning as volunteers and board members at the Waterford Oaks BMX track. Kelley's expertise in track maintenance and building helped Waterford Oaks gain a reputation as a World class BMX racing facility. As a family the Burnette's traveled the NBL national circuit, with Kelly as the official NBL Starter, and their son Ed as a pro racer. Kelley's occupation in the Clarkston school district as a teacher and principal, track and golf coach undoubtedly had an impact on many youngsters in the area. Kelly was one of the founding supporters of team racing here in Michigan and organized Team racing for the Michigan NBL for the past several years. The Perpetual Michigan NBL Team Series Trophy was named in his honor in the 2005 racing season. Perpetuating the sport he loved, was important to Kelly, and he had requested any memorials be made to the Michigan NBL to promote Volunteerism in the sport. So farewell to our friend and one last Time: RIDERS READY................................................................................................................................
